Sun Valley Council Approves $6.1 Million Tentative FY10 Budget

The Sun Valley City Council, on a 2-1 vote, today approved the $6.1 million Fiscal Year 2010 Tentative Budget proposed by Mayor Willich. Council Member Briscoe and I voted to send this budget amount to the formal Public Hearing set for July 30, 2009. Council Member Lamb voted against the Tentative Budget and Council Member Chase was not present for the vote.

Earlier in the meeting, Council Member Lamb made a motion to increase the FY10 Tentative Budget by $500,000. Her motion failed on a 1-2 vote, with Council Member Briscoe and me voting against her amendment. I noted that it would not be responsible to increase the Budget without a specific plan for the use of the money, and given the potential prolonged economic recession, use of reserves in that manner would not be prudent.

After the Mayor discussed the FY10 Tentative Budget in general, I presented a Fund Balance Analysis which I prepared. As I did with last year’s Budget, and during the city consolidation effort, I found that Fund Balance Analysis is one of the best ways to make sure a city budget is fiscally sound and responsible in its overall scope. During the upcoming formal Public Hearing on the FY10 Sun Valley Budget on July 30th, the Council will take a careful look at specific allocations for various contracts for service and staffing for our key emergency services departments.
