Elkhorn Springs Market Opens Today
After years without a store in Elkhorn, we were happy to see the new Market at Elkhorn Springs open today. Proprietor Doug Logan opened the store for business this morning at 7 am.

With the redevelopment of the Elkhorn Village moving along, the opening of the store marks a significant step forward in the renaissance of the area. Having been personally involved in the village master plan approval process while on the Planning and Zoning Commission, it is heartening for me to see this part of the project come to fruition.

It is also very timely for all of us who live in Sun Valley to have a local market to serve our immediate grocery needs. This will help us cut down on our consumption of gasoline and keep some of our tax dollars in our own hometown.

As I toured the store this morning (with a great cup of mocha prepared by Aaron Baker at the Market’s own Espresso Bar), I ran into many of our own locals checking out the place.

I was amazed to find that Doug has thought about almost everything you might need and stocked it in the store: fresh produce, meats, a great wine selection, dairy, hot foods, newspapers, most every condiment you can think about, and plenty more worth checking out. This is far more than just a convenience store, something we can feel very fortunate to have right in our midst.

The Market at Elkhorn Springs is open seven days a week, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Look forward to a grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony in the next couple of weeks.
Our friend, and Elkhorn resident, Sue Bailey wrote this great article about the Market in this week’s Wood River Journal.

my dear Nils,
Thanks for your always fascinating blogs. I was really glad to hear the Country store is open now and plan to visit there soon.
Keep up the good work. Bev Reeves
Yahoo! Can’t wait to ride my bike over to do some shopping. Let’s support this market that we all asked for.
Dear Nils,
Thank you, just like the good old days, a close place to shop, yahoo!!
Thank you for keeping us all informed!
The most exciting element of this new store for me is how they are enabling those of us who aspire to be “locavores” (Webster’s 2007 Word of the Year). Atkinsons and the Farmers Market are also helping towards that goal. With $136/barrel oil, relocalization is going to become ever more important to our community. The absurdity has been that growers 50-70 miles from us have shipped their organic goods into the California organic commodities market only to have that food shipped back to us after traveling many hundreds of miles (and arriving less fresh). The more demand we can show to these growers, the more they will endeavor to provide food to us and they also can make more money in the process (without it costing us any differently than today). It’s also no mystery that super fresh and organic food simply tastes a heck of a lot better than the alternative.
If that weren’t enough, I blogged yesterday about it also promotes greater food safety — see here.
I have lived in Elkhorn-Sun Valley for 14 years and having the store back is one of the most exciting happenings in the last 5 years. What a great destination with no need to travel by car. When are we looking for the rest of the ammenities to open?
